I cant believe this manager of mine at work. He says I'm not allowed to hum anything to myself while I'm working at my desk.
This makes me think I'm living in Mugabe's territory. I'm not one of his 'crew' and he is not hiding the fact that he'd rather not have this strange looking, strange talking and never drunk guy in his team.
I guess I'll be in trouble if I should cough at work

Thanks Liz, I also thought so but not my boss. I hum to myself sometimes when I'm doing admin tasks.

how bizzare! if your humming isn't disturbing anyone then your boss has no right to bitch about it. it's almost like bullying

Humming can be a MAJOR annoyance to people around you who have to listen to it. I work with an elderly woman who "happily" hums off-key almost all day long, and it drives everyone within earshot bonkers. I like to sing showtunes at top decibel when I am really happy, but I don't subject my coworkers to it! Your boss probably is not a friend, and maybe he is less than sober, but he does have a right to ask you to stop humming even if HE is the only one being bothered. He is probably not sitting near you, so it is more likely that he is asking you because someone else who is near you has complained.

Humming a tune is outlawed? I have never heard such rubbish, that is just insane. what harm can humming do?

Absolutely no problem with humming at work as far as I can see, I often do it, it helps you concentrate when needed or relax even. I hum known songs if all's well but if the humming turns "non-specific" then everyone knows I'm stressy on the inside and doing my best to hide it! Would have thought happy workers was a plus not something to be squashed unless of course at volume 10 or something!!? Happy humming x Liz
