The "Golliwogg" (later "Golliwog") is a character of children's literature created by Florence Kate Upton in the late 19th century, inspired by a blackface minstrel doll which Upton found as a child in her aunt's attic in Hampstead, north London.It was not originally intended as racist it is unfortunate however that racists have used it to taunt black people. The doll itself does not have racist origins.

Sex in the workplace has always gone on...and its not always the young that are to blame. Over the twenty odd years I've been working in offices I've seen it happen so often.

I think its people on the whole whose morals are slipping...its like if its on offer no one is going to refuse it, men and women alike!

I'm happily married by the way, and can think of nothing worse than carrying on with any of the guys I work with! Yuck!

I think you should consider legal action if she gives you a job lower than what you were interviewed for. I understand exactly how you feel about not being willing to interact too much with your colleagues.

They always complain that immigrants dont integrate but when immigrants attempt to integrate, they get abused daily. Forigners in my country do not integrate but we dont complain about it. They actually have locations where they can be found. They never do anything that locals do but their own people expect us to accept all the racial slurs in order to 'integrate'.

I pray God sees you through this period of your life.

Thanks. I have looked and I realise that they do keep things in such a way that it will be difficult for me to prove anything although it will be obvious whats going on.

Humming can be a MAJOR annoyance to people around you who have to listen to it. I work with an elderly woman who "happily" hums off-key almost all day long, and it drives everyone within earshot bonkers. I like to sing showtunes at top decibel when I am really happy, but I don't subject my coworkers to it! Your boss probably is not a friend, and maybe he is less than sober, but he does have a right to ask you to stop humming even if HE is the only one being bothered. He is probably not sitting near you, so it is more likely that he is asking you because someone else who is near you has complained.

Yes, I hope you do continue this later. Your boss was wrong to flippantly dismiss it, and should have at least politely issued a gentle, verbal reminder to the lady - it's basic good manners never mind anything else, not to bring personal issues to work. And nipping things like this in the bud can prevent major problems further down the line.

I would take a look at the company's HR policy, and Scottish law in general, and wise up on what they say about bullying and discrimination at work. Sounds like you may need to be prepared.

Thanks Liz, I also thought so but not my boss. I hum to myself sometimes when I'm doing admin tasks.

Absolutely no problem with humming at work as far as I can see, I often do it, it helps you concentrate when needed or relax even. I hum known songs if all's well but if the humming turns "non-specific" then everyone knows I'm stressy on the inside and doing my best to hide it! Would have thought happy workers was a plus not something to be squashed unless of course at volume 10 or something!!? Happy humming x Liz

Perhaps it`s cos you`re not a brown nose like the other workers?
As for your accent not being impressive.... that shouldn`t make the slightest bit of difference should it? That sounds like discrimination to me.....
